I reached a milestone today! I filled the third and final edition of The Power of the Platform: Speakers on Life. Well, actually, I filled it last week, but one of the coauthors dropped out of the project for financial reasons. It’s okay – it means I have one chapter still available for one special speaker who needs a book FAST! These books will be ready near the end of June – speed that traditional publishing deals can’t come close to!
Another publisher, commenting on the economy, told me a few weeks ago that books are something people WANT…not something that they NEED. I disagree wholeheartedly! There is nothing that can define you as an expert more than being a published author. I LOVE meeting people who LOVE books! For professional speakers, being published is NOT an OPTION.
I spoke in Monterey, California last week on B Face 2 Face 4 Success, based upon my book, The Art of the Business Lunch. I stayed at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Monterey. The concierge, Ina, had helped me before I ever left home by setting up a tee time for me at the local golf course. I took some books with me to give to her as a thank you. Ina was not at her desk when I dropped them off; the other concierge, Diane, was there at the time. She looked so disappointed that the books were not for her that I RAN BACK to my room to get some for her, too.
Turns out Diane loves personal development and assured me she would read them all while she worked out at the gym that afternoon. When I saw her the next day, she had, indeed, read the anthologies…ate ’em right up while on the treadmill; Lord love a reader!
I know the words in the books I gave Diane will help her to live her best life ever.
If you are a professional speaker, a book can be the best marketing tool you could ever have. It’s the appetizer to the main course that is your presentation! (Of COURSE I have to make a food analogy!) It can also be a perfect reminder for audiences everywhere – a piece of you to take home so they will always remember the lessons you shared with them, the moments of inspiration, or the motivation they connected with while you were on the platform.
Aligning yourself with other successful speakers and personal development icons is the biggest step you can take toward assuring your success. After all, you are judged by the company you keep – and in this case, it’s a huge plus to become a coauthor in an anthology series that features Jack Canfield, Brian Tracy, Les Brown, and other outstanding experts!
MEETING PROFESSIONALS should negotiate books into their deals when they hire speakers. Most speakers will appreciate not having to sell their books one at a time….but will delight in being able to sign them for the attendees. And most planners can secure a great discount if they buy a quantity – anywhere from 40 – 4,000! Speakers & Books – as perfect together as a hand and a glove!
